K-Y Yours + Mine Couples Lubricant, Two 1.5 fl oz BottlesAfter menopause, the irony is that, with no chance of pregnancy, sex can be better than ever – provided all your parts work as they once did….which they most likely won’t.
Painful sex is a typical side effect of menopause. The vagina, evidently thinking its job and life is over, can atrophy, the tissues thin, and dryness occurs – that’s right, atrophy, thinning and dryness….Oh my!
And, this painful sex can just ‘happen’ one day with little warning – even more joy. In fact, studies show that painful intercourse can occur in 17-45% of women. From talking to other menopausal women, more than 45% of my friends have painful sex.
There’s a few ways to combat vaginal dryness which causes painful sex after menopause. One of the newest things on the market is the Estring (prescription only) which is a small ring that is placed in the vagina for up to 3 months. It releases just a bit of estrogen on a daily basis and helps relieve painful sex. The fact that the estrogen is ‘topical’ means that side effects such as increased risk of breast cancer are nullified.
If you don’t want to go that route, there are some products on the market, like lubrications, that may help. If nothing else, they can be fun!
